CAUTION: Awning Cinch Straps will only solve 50% of the problems that may occur with your awning. If your cinch straps are in good shape and are cinched properly to the awning arms, they will help prevent the problem of the awning arms coming open as you travel down the road.
The other problem that can occur is the failure of the primary manufacturers independent locking mechanism in the roller tube. When this fails, the roller tube begins to freewheel. The wind then causes the awning canopy to unravel and billow over the top of the rig. The arms stay locked to the side of the RV.
If either of these two things occurs, you are faced with a traumatic situation. Most likely you will have done a lot of damage to your awning and your rig. You are then faced with a major inconvenience and expense.
We highly recommend you check out our Awning Lock. This device prevents the roller tube from turning, thus preventing the arms from coming open as well as the roller tube from freewheeling. It is simple to install and easy to use. When you install the awning lock you will rest assured that your travels will be safe. You will also have 100% assurance that your awning wont come open or unravel.
IF YOUR AWNING DOES COME OPEN (IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO USE EITHER CINCH STRAPS OR THE AWNING LOCK) HERE IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO TO PREVENT AS MUCH DAMAGE AS POSSIBLE:
1. Pull over and try to get the awning side downwind. There may be an exit off the road which would allow you to turn the rig around, or to get off under an overpass or beside a building.2. If the awning is not damaged at this point rewind the awning and secure to the rig. Be careful about going up on the roof. DO NOT go on the roof if the awning is not secure as it may go over the roof and hit you.3. If you are still in a high wind condition DO NOT try and save the awning. The personal injury that could occur to you is not worth it. People have been seriously injured by awnings in windy conditions. (The most natural thing in the world is to try and save the awning and prevent potential damage to the rig)4. If the Awning fabric is torn, cut it off and secure the arms to the rig.5. In some cases the arms will be damaged and you may need to get help to cut the arms off the rig. | | | |
